Pancake Breakfast

Knights of Council 11886 provided a pancake breakfast to Parishioners of Holy Name of Jesus following each of the three masses on Sunday 19 February.

Over 110 diners took advantage of the event. Keeping with the theme that this was not a fundraiser but simply provided for the benefit of the parishioners so that they could have some social fellowship time, they still came through with donations that easily covered all expenses.

Poster Contest

Council 11886 hosted the Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest. There were categories for Alcohol Awareness and Abuse as well as Drug Awareness and Abuse for Ages 8-11 and Ages 12-14 in each category.

There were sixty-one participants from both Holy Name of Jesus Catholic School and St Martha's Catholic School.

1st Place Participants will receive a certificate and $25 Gift Card
for Chapters/Indigo Books as well as having their posters progress
to the District Level Competition

Family of the Month - Supreme Edition

Each Month the Grand Knight selects and submits a Knight and his family as Family of the Month. While we do not give it much recognition at the council level, the submission once made to Supreme is included in a random drawing of 100 families each month.

It was recently announced that for August 2011 - SK Roy and Cecile Gould were selected.
It was further announce that for the October 2011 - Bro Ludger Hacault and his family were selected. St Vincent de Paul - Vinnies Kitchen

Each month the Council volunteers one day to provide meals at St V de Paul. For December the council brought a long some gifts for the children who often accompany moms for the noon meal. As it happened no children appeared this time, but over 130 meals were served. The gifts were left with St V de Paul for children whom the staff believed were most in need of some Christmas Cheer. December volunteers included Br George Caron, SK Basil Brosso, SK Pat Stenson, Br Mike Stenson, SK Roger Levac, & SK Pete Scott.

Our Knight from Fulham

SK Bill Walker was recently presented with photos obtained from the archives of Fulham FC. As a young lad Bill played with Fulham prior to leaving England. SK Bill is currently recovering from eye surgery and looks forward to once again getting out with his Brother Knights in the new year. SK Bill and his three daughters were selected as the council's Family of the Month for November.

Christmas Meat Pies

Several Knights helped SK Guy Lahaie make and bake over 230 meat pies which were sold during the Parish Advent festival. The pies visible in the photo were very popular. The Festival was hosted by the CWL as a fundraising event for the Stain Glass Windows. Knights also assisted in the preparation and delivery of the pancake breakfast. Overall many parishioners enjoyed the opportunity to meet and mingle.

Family of the Month - Supreme Recognition

Each month the Council recognizes a Family and forward the submission to Supreme Office. Our submission for October 2011. Each month Knights of Columbus Supreme selects 100 families from the international order for further recognition.

Brother Ludger Hacault and his family, Leslie, Rachel, Nathan, Thomas, Sandra, Nicholas, Samuel, and Elizabeth will receive a Holy Family Statuette along with a letter of congratulations from Supreme Carl A Anderson.

Winter Ready

Charter Night - 15th Anniversary

Brother Mike Stenson, Worthy Chancellor, served as Master of Ceremonies at the council's 15th Anniversary banquet. Brother Mike was alone worth the price of admission, but wonderful food and great comaradarie was also included. The council was blessed to have three of the six priests on the council roster, including Charter Chaplain Fr Richard Whelan, current Council Chaplain Fr Wes Chochrek and Fr George Savoie retired priest. Several of the Charter Members returned to Kingston for this event and all but one Past Grand Knight was available to attend. The celebration was witnessed by the Ontario State Treasurer Sir Knight Alain Cayer and Worthy District Deputy Sir Knight Dennis Keefe.

THE SNEEZE

They walked in tandem, each of the ninety-two students filing into the already crowded auditorium. With their rich maroon gowns flowing and the traditional caps, they looked almost as grown up as they felt.

Dads swallowed hard behind broad smiles, and Moms freely brushed away tears.

This class would NOT pray during the commencements, not by choice, but because of a recent court ruling prohibiting it.

The principal and several students were careful to stay within the guidelines allowed by the ruling. They gave inspirational and challenging speeches, but no one mentioned divine guidance and no one asked for blessings on the graduates or their families.

The speeches were nice, but they were routine until the final speech received a standing ovation.

A solitary student walked proudly to the microphone. He stood still and silent for just a moment, and then, it happened.

All 92 students, every single one of them, suddenly SNEEZED !!!!

The student on stage simply looked at the audience and said,
'GOD BLESS YOU'

And ...he walked off
The audience exploded into applause. This graduating class had found a unique way to invoke God's blessing on their future with or without the court's approval.

Isn't this a wonderful story?

This is a true story; it happened at Eastern Shore District High School in Musquodoboit Harbour , Nova Scotia.

Knights of Columbus Present Ethical Economic Growth Plans

CHICAGO, OCT. 13, 2011 (Zenit.org).- Finding long-term economic growth without compromising ethics was the subject of the Sustainable Investments Conference that was hosted by the Knights of Columbus today in Chicago.

The day-long conference was designed to bring cutting edge sustainable investing techniques to managers of diocesan, non-profit and charitable portfolios.

Speakers addresses the nature of sustainable investing, screening methods, sustainable public equity investing, sustainable fixed income investing, timber investing, and the intersection between Catholic social teaching and sustainable investing.

Cardinal Francis George of Chicago also briefly addressed the participants.

"At the World Economic Forum, I have watched for several years as sustainable investing has become an increasing topic of discussion, and I believe those principles are of considerable importance to anyone who wants to maintain profitability and ethics," said Carl Anderson, the leader of the Knights. "The Knights of Columbus has long used a sustainable investing model. Even during difficult economic times, this approach has helped us to consistently grow our portfolio and remain recognized for excellence, with no other insurer in the United States having a higher rating than we do."

The Knights of Columbus has $17 billion in assets under management.

District Soccer Awards

Concrete Achievement

Sir Knights Steve Coombs (standing) and Guy Lahaie (kneeling) make a concrete effort to improve things about the parish.

Seen here are the finishing touches to a cement pad upon which the propane tanks will soon be placed. This provides a safer base than the previous rough ground which left the tanks leaning against the side of the building.

Just another way in which Knights are charitable with their time and talents to support their parish community.

2012 Dues Payable

Membership cards are now available for the 2012 calendar year. We are accepting payment of dues immediately. Those who have served as Financial Secretary know what a pain it is to chase people for dues .... so in order to encourage and thank those who pay without prodding a draw will be made from all memberships paid prior and including the meeting of 9 January 2012. The lucky winner will be refunded the equivalent value of his dues as thanks for being proactive.

Knights helping Holy Family Chapel

As our council supports two parishes the BBQ held 18 September provided a rare opportunity that we could do something for the parishioner of Holy Family Chapel at CFB Kingston. Those who participated had a great time and no one should have left hungry.

Sir Knight Scotty Smith (flame man) is chairman of the Parish Round Table that support this Chapel on behalf of the council. We look forward to more opportunities to this parish.

This event proved that every day is a recruiting day and sometimes more valuable than a special recruiting blitz. We received a request for a transfer in to the council and found a young man interested in joining the Knights.

Columbian Award

The council was presented the 2010-2011 Columbian Award at the September Meeting. This recognizes the council achievement in at least 4 of the program areas. A fitting tribute to the leadership and effort of our (now) Past Grand Knight George Caron who was also presented his PGK pin.

Community EXPO

Canadian Force Base Kingston hosted an information EXPO to raise the awareness of military personnel about what clubs, recreation and activites are available in the community.

Council 11886 was there providing information about the Knights of Columbus. Sir Knight Steve Coombs and Brother Peter Maillet ham it up infront of the council booth.

Summer Grass

Brother Bob Bryan is just one of the many volunteers from our council who keep the parish lawns looking great all summer.

The Knights of Columbus volunteer efforts help avoid costly ground maintenance costs each year.

Other notable volunteers include Allan Sullivan, Roger Levac, Mike Stenson, George Caron, Pat Stenson and Steve Coombs.

August Knights

A great social time was had by all participants. The event was hosted at the home of Brother Mike Stenson. Members, families and friends gathered for food, drink and a little play time.

Fr Wes ensured the rain stayed away. Fr George ensured the food was thoroughly tested and Seminarian Justin just soaked up all the great food and company. Just like the July Edition this event ended with a rainbow.

This family event was a fitting way to mark the end of summer, renew old aquaintences and meet some new candidates as we prepare for another busy Columbian Year. More photos available at the link

Cristiada - The Movie

Enclosed, please find the link to the soon to be released movie, "Cristiada" that was viewed at the 129th Supreme Convention in Denver. As you will see from the trailer, the movie covers a very violent period in the late 1920's when the government of Mexico tried to destroy the Catholic Church in that country. Many innocent people were killed, including members of
the clergy who were later canonized as Saints for their martyrdom. The movie depicts real people in very real circumstances and covers a period that for many years, the Mexican government tried to cover up as though it never took place. Now the truth will soon be hitting the big screen.
This movie is endorsed by the Knights of Columbus and should be viewed by everyone, not just Catholics. We hope that you will promote this film within your jurisdiction and encourage your members to attend to learn the real history of Mexico. The film stars Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria and Peter O'Toole as one of the priests and is planned for release in late 2011.

Financial Rating Knights of Columbus

The Supreme Knight issued the following statement concerning S&P's downgrade of AAA-rated insurers in the United States

The action taken by Standard and Poor's on Monday, August 8, does not reflect in any way on the business operations or performance of the Knights of Columbus. S&P's action - as their statement indicates - was caused by the downgrade of the rating of the United States in response to this country's debt crisis. According to S&P's statement on the methodology for their decision "the U.S. sovereign credit rating constrains the long-term ratings on these U.S. insurers." S&P's latest release cites the "very strong financial profiles" and "favorable business profiles" of the Knights of Columbus and other insurers affected by their rating revision. In addition, they cite the benefit the Knights of Columbus has from our "affinity relationships with our policyholders."

Because of our sound and ethical business practices and investment strategies, the Knights of Columbus is stronger today relative to the industry than it was five years ago. Over the past five years, the life insurance industry as a whole has seen a 6.8 percent decrease in sales. But during that same time, Knights of Columbus life insurance sales have grown by 20.7 percent. Since the financial crisis began in 2008, we have improved both operational performance and the credit quality of our investments. We continue to have the highest rating possible from A.M. Best (A++) and the highest rating S&P is able to give to any insurance company based in the United States (AA+). In short, there continues to be no more highly rated insurer in the United States than the Knights of Columbus, and our members can continue to have the highest confidence in our performance as a company and in the safety of the money that they have entrusted to us.

Life Chain Demonstration

The annual Life Chain demonstration will be held in Kingston on October 2/2011. Pro-lifers will gather in front of Murney Tower across from the Kingston General Hospital at 1.45 p.m.. The demonstration will begin with a prayer at that location. At 2.00 we will line up across the street, facing the hospital in a peaceful and prayful demonstration to bear witness to the many abortions being carried out at KGH.

Sir Knight Pat Stenson "tent guy" has kept busy coordinating tent rentals on behalf of the council. Delivery, set up, tear down, pick up and hustling new customers are all part of the job description. Pat is happy for help. Let him know if you are availalble.

Pile of Money

Brother Mike Stenson (L) and Sir Knight Fernand Delisle (R) load up the truck and trailer with scrap metal. There are several piles of money around the province just waiting to be cashed in.

Council 11886 is helping Fernand rid his recently purchased property of a quantity of scrap metal left by the previous owner. Fernand is graciously donating the proceeds to the council.

Summer Knights - July Edition

24 Knights attended this event. It was intended to be a simple evening out and a chance to visit in a relaxed setting. Folk arrived at 5pm we put together a take out order from Boston Pizza. We visited, ate and enjoyed. Photos available at.

Out Door Mass

Fr John Gillis always wanted an outdoor mass so the Parish Council, Knights and CWL banded together to deliver his wish as part of his final weekend of mass at Holy Name of Jesus Parish.

Sorry it took us so long. The Knights coordinated the set up of tents for shade, preparation and serving of the BBQ, set up of the outdoor altar, and movement of chairs and tables for all concerned. Year End Dinner

Grand Knight George Caron hosted the Columbian Year End Dinner at Mino's. Nearly 40 members and spouses attended. Great food. Great Company.

Grand Knight George presented the Family of the Year award to Brother Phil Henderson and his wife Marjorie. He also thanked Sir Knight Pat Stenson for his outstanding service to the council this year. Brother Allan Sullivan was also identified for his tireless contribution to maintaining the Parish Lawns during the summer. Brother Mike Stenson was thanked for leading the annual State Lottery program. Mike actually volunteered to do it again.

District Deputy presented the council with the State award for the Knight Moves bulletin which recognized the efforts of our dedicated editor Sir Knight Steve Coombs.

Special Guests to the event included the Current District Deputy Brother Phil Henderson, current District Warden Brother David Ringrose, designate District Deputy Sir Knight Dennis Keefe, Fraternal Agent Neil Goberdhan and Diocesan Director Sir Knight Ian Moore.

Parish Fun Fair

The idea of a Fun Fair germinated from Sir Knight Pat Stenson. It was like the little party that grew. In the end the rain stayed away long enough for a great day. Bouncing castle, face painting, pony rides, Fire Dept display, antique vehicle display, music, dancing, plant sale, bake sale, craft sale, silent auction, bbq and a whole lot of fellowship took place.

The day wrapped up with the draw which raised nearly $1600 for the stain glass window repair project.
